Introduction to Next Project: Self-Mailer

Project 03: Direct Mail Self-Mailer

10% of your final course grade
Due: 03/29/2010

What the Post Office Says About Direct Mail

About Mailer Sizes and Shapes

(Definitely read this to ensure that whatever you design can be mailed. They recommend that you don't design square pieces, but for this project it is fine. They just say that they are not easily sorted by their equipment, and you may have to pay for extra postage.)

(Just an awesome design blog of work - Studio on Fire - can serve as design inspiration, even if it is not all direct mail.)

White Dog - Self-Mailer Examples (check out invitations too) - they had a whole section on self-mailers alone.

What should your mailer be? Well, for one thing, it should relate to your business very well. What is a realistic idea for a promotion that they might have? Is it a take-out menu? Is it advertising a sale? Is it an invite to a specific event at your business? Is it launching a new service or product line? Does it have a coupon? Think about something that would be clever and a good marketing idea...something that would make your piece stand out in a crowd and not get thrown away like so much other junk mail. But - do be aware of  environmental concerns as well as cost-effectiveness; you don't want to design something that creates a lot of waste in a landfill or costs a ton of money to produce. Be innovative, but think of practicality as well!

I want your piece mailable itself without an envelope. Also, it can not be simply a postcard! Your project should include at least one fold. Think about interesting or more complex folds, die-cuts, etc. Be creative, but think in terms of usability as well (how well does it work as a self-contained mailer?).

More examples later!
